46-year-old arrested after Larnaca motorcycle crash

Police arrested a 46-year-old motorcyclist after a crash with a moped in Aradippou, saying he was driving without a licence and tested positive for alcohol and in a preliminary drug test.

The crash happened at around 5pm yesterday on Limassol Avenue, at the traffic-light junction with Makedonias Avenue and Nikiforou Foka Street, in Larnaca district. Police said the 46-year-old was riding his motorcycle when, under circumstances being investigated, he collided with a moped driven by a 45-year-old woman.

Police officers went to the scene for checks. Both drivers, who were wearing helmets, were taken by ambulance to Larnaca General Hospital.

Doctors found that the 45-year-old had injuries to her left arm. She was kept in hospital, with her condition described as out of danger. The 46-year-old was discharged after he was found not to have suffered any serious injury.

As part of the investigation, both drivers were tested for alcohol. Police said the 46-year-old gave a reading of 59 μg%ml, above the permitted limit of 9 μg%ml, while the 45-year-old gave a zero reading.

The 46-year-old also tested positive in a preliminary drug-driving test, and samples were taken from him for a final laboratory drug test.

Police checks found that the 46-year-old was riding without a driving licence and without insurance cover. The motorcycle was also registered with the Road Transport Department as immobilised and had no valid roadworthiness certificate.

Police obtained an arrest warrant against the 46-year-old. He was arrested at around 11pm and taken into custody.

Larnaca traffic police are continuing investigations.

A second motorcycle crash happened in Paphos district overnight. A 68-year-old motorcyclist, who was also wearing a helmet, is being treated at Paphos General Hospital, with his condition described as out of danger.

The crash happened at around 1am, while the 68-year-old was riding on Thalassinon Spilion Avenue in Peyia. Under circumstances being investigated, he lost control of the motorcycle, which overturned on the road.

Police officers went to the scene, while the 68-year-old was taken by ambulance to Paphos General Hospital. Doctors found that he had injuries to his chest and pelvis.

The 68-year-old was tested for alcohol and drugs, with both checks giving a zero reading.

Paphos traffic police are investigating.
