Yellow warning remains in force as rain, storms and strong winds hit Cyprus

A yellow warning for rain, isolated thunderstorms and strengthened north-easterly winds came into force across Cyprus at 7 am on Saturday and will remain active until 7 am on Sunday, according to the official warning.

The warning says weather conditions are expected to affect the island at intervals and that total rainfall may locally exceed 55 millimetres over 24 hours.

A low-pressure system centred south of Cyprus is affecting the island, while dust will remain suspended in the atmosphere until Sunday, with concentrations at times expected to be elevated.

Tonight, the weather will remain mostly cloudy with rain and isolated thunderstorms. Hail may fall in thunderstorms, while sleet or snow is possible on the highest peaks of Troodos. Winds will blow mainly from the north-east to south-east at 4 to 5 Beaufort and in northern areas at 5 to 6 Beaufort. The sea will be rough to very rough. Temperatures will fall to around 10C inland, 12C on the coast and around zero in the highest mountains, where frost is expected in places.

Tomorrow, the weather will be partly cloudy to mostly cloudy at times, with local rain and isolated thunderstorms expected. Hail may fall in thunderstorms, while sleet or snow cannot be ruled out on the highest peaks of Troodos. Winds will blow south-westerly to westerly at 5 to 6 Beaufort and the sea will be rough to very rough. Temperatures will reach around 17 °C inland, 19 °C on the coast and 9 °C in the higher mountains.

Tomorrow night, increased cloud in the west may bring isolated rain. Winds will blow south-westerly to westerly at 4 to 5 Beaufort and the sea will be up to rough.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, periods of increased cloud are expected and may bring isolated rain in the mountains after midday. From late Wednesday afternoon, local rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected.
