Woman arrested attempting to smuggle crystal meth into Central Prisons during visit

A woman was arrested on Sunday after narcotics officers caught her attempting to smuggle what is believed to be crystal methamphetamine into Nicosia’s Central Prisons during a scheduled visit to an inmate, according to philenews information.

Members of the Narcotics Unit (YKAN) intercepted the visitor before she could hand over around 17 grams of white powder, believed to contain the synthetic drug known colloquially as “the cocaine of the poor.”

The substance has been sent to the State General Laboratory for confirmation.

The arrest came after prison authorities had been monitoring the specific inmate’s visits for some time, following information suggesting he may have been receiving drugs.

The prisoner, from Larnaca, had previously attempted to smuggle narcotics into the prison when he was being transported to court several months earlier, raising suspicions that he would try again by other means.

Following her arrest on the spot, the woman was taken to YKAN’s Nicosia offices for questioning.

The Prison Department works closely with the narcotics service to detect contraband and operates specialist detection equipment, trained wardens, and sniffer dogs used during cell inspections.
