Winds reaching up to force 7 on the Beaufort scale will affect Cyprus’s coastal areas, the meteorological department warned on Tuesday.
Strong to very strong and temporarily very strong to near gale-force westerly to northwesterly winds of force 5 to 6, and temporarily force 6 to 7, will affect western and locally southern and northern coastal areas, according to the warning.
Sea conditions will be locally rough along southern coasts and moderate in western and northern areas.
The met office said weak high pressure is affecting the region. Isolated showers or thunderstorms are expected initially, mainly in western and northern areas, however conditions will become mainly clear after midday.
Visibility will be good to moderate, locally restricted. Sea temperature will be 18 degrees Celsius.
Self-protection measures during strong winds
Authorities advised residents to exercise particular caution in areas experiencing strong winds and to avoid unnecessary travel. People should seek shelter indoors and close doors and windows in homes or workplaces.
Objects that cannot be secured should be removed from outdoor spaces, including plant pots, tables, chairs and decorative items. Any work or activities that could cause fires should be avoided.
Advertising signs on properties should be secured properly.
Activities in maritime and coastal areas should be avoided.
People should avoid passing under large trees, signs or balconies, and secure all objects that could be carried away by wind and cause damage or injuries, such as signs, water tanks and solar water heaters.
Employers are advised to take all appropriate measures to protect workers performing outdoor tasks, including temporary suspension of work at construction sites where necessary.
