Water supply cuts hit three districts as Dhekelia desalination plant shuts for maintenance

Residents in three of Cyprus’s districts face reduced water supply for three days starting on Tuesday as the Dhekelia desalination plant undergoes scheduled maintenance.

The Water Development Department (WDD) said drinking water supply to the Larnaca, Nicosia and Famagusta districts would be noticeably lower from Tuesday 17 February to Thursday 19 February, with output from the plant significantly curtailed during that period.

The maintenance work is part of the plant’s routine servicing schedule, the department said.

The WDD said it was in constant contact with all relevant bodies to manage reserves and cover residents’ basic needs, but urged consumers to limit water use to essential needs only, avoid all unnecessary consumption and act responsibly to help safeguard supplies.

The department added that the effective use of water would make a significant contribution to tackling the water scarcity affecting the country.

Normal supply is expected to be restored gradually after work is completed on Thursday.

The WDD apologised for any inconvenience caused, stressing that the maintenance was necessary to ensure the long-term operation of the plant’s infrastructure.
