Union calls on British Bases to switch staff to remote working over security threats

A Cypriot civil service union has formally called on the Sovereign Base Areas Administration to implement remote working immediately for all British Bases personnel whose duties can be performed off-site, amid escalating regional conflict and growing anxiety over staff safety.

The Branch of Civil Administration Employees of the British Bases – SBAA, operating under PASIDY, sent a written letter to Deputy Command Secretary Stephen Dougan through its General Secretary Stratis Matthaiou, urging the administration to act without delay.

The union said the Akrotiri base administration had already instructed its staff to evacuate, with the base now operating on minimum essential security personnel only.

However, no equivalent instructions have been issued for the British bases at Episkopi, Dhekelia, and Agios Nikolaos, leaving staff there in a state of uncertainty and serious concern about their safety, the union said.

In its letter, the union argued that keeping personnel on-site under heightened security conditions could unnecessarily expose them to danger and that activating remote working protocols would demonstrate responsible leadership and a clear commitment to duty of care.

It called on the administration to assess the situation with the utmost seriousness and implement remote working wherever operationally feasible.

The letter described the matter as critical and called for prompt attention.
