UK sends additional helicopter to Cyprus to bolster military base defense

The United Kingdom has deployed an additional helicopter to Cyprus to enhance the defense of its military bases on the island.

The helicopter, a multi-role Merlin Mk2, was transported from a naval air station in Cornwall and will join two Wildcat helicopters that have been stationed in Cyprus since last Friday.

According to British officials, the Merlin will provide “an extra layer of defense,” as it is capable of flying at altitudes of up to one mile, offering early warning for any incoming missiles or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Meanwhile, Defence Minister John Healy announced in the House of Commons last night that the HMS Dragon will depart for Cyprus within “the next two days,” with naval crews working “tirelessly, 22 hours a day” to prepare the warship for deployment.
