The UK government has updated its travel advice for Cyprus to warn that terrorist attacks on the island cannot be ruled out, following the suspected drone strike on RAF Akrotiri earlier this month.
The advisory, updated on 5 March 2026, confirmed that the Sovereign Base Areas Administration had verified a drone impact at RAF Akrotiri on 2 March.
It said regional escalation posed significant security risks and had led to travel disruption.
British nationals in the Sovereign Base Areas were advised to follow instructions from the SBAA, while those in the Republic of Cyprus were told to follow guidance from Cypriot local authorities.
The updated advice urged British nationals to review FCDO crisis guidance, sign up to travel advice email alerts, monitor local and international media, follow local authority instructions, keep departure plans under review, and ensure their travel documents were up to date.
The head of MI6, Blaise Metreweli, is due to travel to Cyprus on Friday to meet President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace.
The meeting, scheduled for 9 am, comes days after an Iranian-made Shahed drone struck the runway at RAF Akrotiri in the early hours of 2 March, causing minor damage and no casualties. Cypriot and British officials said the drone was launched from Lebanon. Two further drones heading towards the base were subsequently intercepted by British forces.
