President Donald Trump has said he believes China persuaded Iran to negotiate a ceasefire in the war against the United States and Israel, as Beijing confirmed it had played a role in efforts toward lasting peace in the Middle East.
Trump made the remarks to AFP on Thursday, a day after China’s foreign ministry welcomed the two-week truce and said it had made its own contributions toward bringing it about.
“China has consistently advocated for an immediate ceasefire and cessation of hostilities, as well as the resolution of disputes through political and diplomatic channels,” ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a regular briefing on Wednesday. She did not elaborate on the specific nature of China’s efforts when pressed.
