Troodos sees first snow of the season; Police warn of icy roads (video)

The Troodos mountains have recorded the first snowfall of the winter, with flurries observed late this evening, turning the high elevations white.

Weather monitoring service Kitasweather reported the phenomenon, noting that localised rain and snow were occurring due to a “Sea Effect” that was extending south towards the Troodos area.

The forecast predicted that a light dusting of snow was expected, with flakes potentially visible down to approximately 1,400 metres.

The snowfall coincided with what was previously forecast to be the coldest night of the winter so far.

Following the light snowfall and low prevailing temperatures, Police have issued a warning regarding ice on the following roads, which are now considered slippery and dangerous:

Karvounas – Troodos

Platres – Troodos

Prodromos – Troodos

Movement on these routes is strictly permitted only for four-wheel-drive (4×4) vehicles or those equipped with anti-skid chains.
