Transport Minister happy with EC approval of incentive scheme for airways

Cyprus’ Transport Ministry expressed satisfaction over European Fee’s approval, final week, of a €6.13 million Cypriot incentive scheme geared to assist airways affected by the coronavirus pandemic, having discovered it to be according to the State assist Short-term Framework of the EU.

The scheme is a re-introduction of an assist measure initially accredited by the Fee on 1 July 2020 (SA.57691), which expired on 31 December 2021.

A press launch issued on Monday by the Ministry says that Minister Yiannis Karousos factors out that Cyprus has taken the initiative on a European degree, for air connectivity and can put together and promote the related declaration. The declaration offers for the assist of primarily regional and island member states of the EU. Cyprus’ initiative was welcomed by 12 extra EU member states, that are set to co-sign the declaration subsequent April, the press launch says.

The scheme, which is able to take the type of direct grants, might be open to all airways working routes to and from Cyprus.

The purpose of the scheme is to assist airways in a complete and non-discriminatory method with the intention to re-establish air routes from and to Cyprus, and thus allow the restoration of air connectivity and tourism, the press launch notes.

The scheme has been discovered to be according to the circumstances set out within the Short-term Framework, because the assist won’t exceed €2.3 million per beneficiary and might be granted no later than 30 June 2022.
