President Nikos Christodoulides unveiled the official logo for the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU on Sunday, revealing a design rooted in the traditional Lefkara lace. The emblem uses the craft’s intricate patterns to symbolise a more autonomous Europe that derives its strength from unity.
Threads of Unity
The logo features 27 distinct elements, each representing an EU member state. These components interlock to mirror the craftsmanship of Lefkaritika—a textile art recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. President Christodoulides explained that the thread “symbolises the unity of the EU and our great goal for an even more autonomous Europe, open to the world.”
The Presidency described the thread as a metaphor for the European project: “fragile on its own, but strong and cohesive when woven together with others.” This synthesis represents a transition from theory to a resilient, harmonious whole.

Symbolic Colours and Design
Designed by graphic artist Marios Kouroufexis, the logo incorporates specific cultural and political identifiers:
The Sun and Copper: Warm orange tones reflect the Mediterranean sun and the copper hues of the Cypriot flag.
The Blue Background: The deep EU blue emphasizes Cyprus’s identity as an inseparable part of the European family.
The Structure: The circular arrangement evokes a shining sun, representing Cyprus’s role as a bridge between cultures and regions.

During the presentation at the Lefkara Conference Centre, the President outlined a vision for a robust and resilient Europe. The Cyprus Presidency pledges to advance the Union across critical sectors, including security and defence, competitiveness, fiscal stability, and the green and digital transitions.
The logo serves as a visual commitment to these goals, conveying that the Union’s power lies in “cooperation, solidarity, stability, and deepening integration.”
