Three kidney patients get new chance at life in Cyprus-Israel transplant chain

One patient in Cyprus and two in Israel, who had been on dialysis programmes for years, have a new chance at life following successful cross-matched kidney transplants in a health collaboration between Cyprus and Israel.

A highly demanding and internationally coordinated chain of three kidney transplants in Cyprus and Israel, part of which was a cross-matched kidney transplant, was completed with complete success, with Nicosia General Hospital’s Transplant Clinic playing the central role in the procedure.

The operation took place on 4 November 2025 at Nicosia General Hospital, in cooperation with Cyprus’s Health Ministry and corresponding services in Israel.

The chain of life involved Nicosia General Hospital and Beilinson and Hadassah hospitals in Israel.

A kidney from a living donor at Hadassah was transferred to Cyprus and transplanted into a Cypriot patient by the State Health Services Organisation transplant team.

A kidney from a living donor in Cyprus was transferred to Beilinson and transplanted into an Israeli patient.

A kidney from an altruistic living donor at Beilinson was transferred to Hadassah and transplanted into a second Israeli patient.

Through this collaboration, three people — one in Cyprus and two in Israel — who had been on dialysis programmes for years, gained a new life prospect.

The success of the transplant at Nicosia General Hospital is due to the high specialisation of the Transplant Clinic, the only transplant unit in Cyprus, the flawless coordination achieved between the Cyprus and Israel teams; and the expertise the State Health Services Organisation has developed in recent years in this field, according to the announcement.

The patient who underwent the transplant was discharged today in very good general condition, continuing her recovery outside hospital with excellent prospects, according to the organisation.

The success highlights the importance of international cooperation in cross-matched transplant programmes with neighbouring countries such as Israel, as well as the capabilities and high expertise of the Cypriot health system, according to the announcement.

It particularly highlights the work of Nicosia General Hospital’s Transplant Clinic, where seven cross-matched kidney transplants have been carried out in recent years, as well as the ongoing commitment of medical teams to providing high-level care.

Finally, it confirms the excellent cooperation between Cyprus and Israel in the field of kidney transplantation, the announcement said.

The State Health Services Organisation and Nicosia General Hospital’s Transplant Clinic, as the organisation’s specialised transplant unit, expressed warm thanks to Cyprus’s Health Ministry, Israel’s National Transplant Centre and the cooperating teams in Israel for the excellent collaboration and the common goal of saving and improving the quality of life of patients.
