A third checkpoint and traffic lane came into operation at the Agios Dometios crossing point on Friday, officially opening the crossing’s expanded capacity to vehicles.
Konstantinos Yiangou, deputy mayor of Agios Dometios, told philenews the third checkpoint had been activated after extensive efforts.
“We welcome the opening of the third lane and hope that police staffing across all three checkpoints will be adequate so that all three can operate simultaneously when needed,” he said.

Police confirmed the third checkpoint is now operational and will function daily, depending on traffic demand at the crossing.

The final phase of construction works, which involved work inside the Green Line, was completed on 16 February. The project was funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Cyprus.

According to UNDP Cyprus, the upgraded crossing now includes an additional lane in each direction as well as a new pedestrian path, marking a significant improvement in support of daily movement across Nicosia.
