Stormy weather with gale-force winds for New Year’s Eve

Cyprus will see stormy conditions on New Year’s Eve, Wednesday, with rain, isolated thunderstorms and the possibility of hail, according to the meteorological service.

Snow or sleet is expected on the highest Troodos peaks. Strong to very strong southwesterly winds of 5 to 6 Beaufort will blow across the island, reaching gale force 7 temporarily along the coast. The sea will be rough to very rough.

Temperatures will reach around 16°C inland, 18°C on the coast and 4°C in the higher mountains.

New Year’s Day will bring partly to mainly cloudy conditions with isolated showers expected, particularly in the western half of the island. Snow or sleet is forecast for the highest Troodos peaks and locally in higher mountain areas.

Friday and Saturday will see mainly fine weather with temporary local cloud increases.

Temperatures on Thursday are not expected to change significantly, but they will drop on Friday to well below seasonal averages before rising again on Saturday.
