Storm ADEL triggers yellow warning for thunderstorms across Cyprus

The Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms in effect from 11pm on Saturday (29 November) until 5pm on Sunday (30 November).

Isolated severe thunderstorms are expected to affect the island at intervals, initially in the west and north and progressively in other areas.

Hail is expected during thunderstorms, whilst winds will vary and strengthen. Rainfall intensity is likely to range between 35 and 55 millimetres per hour.

A low-pressure system named ADEL, centred over southern Italy, is moving north-eastwards and will begin affecting the island from Saturday evening, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Saturday forecast

This afternoon, increased medium and high clouds will appear at intervals. Winds will blow mainly north-easterly to south-easterly, light to moderate, Force 3 to 4, and temporarily reaching strong Force 4 to 5 on northern, eastern and southern coasts. The sea will be calm to slightly rough in the west and south, but slightly rough and temporarily rough in the north and east.

Tonight, increased medium and high clouds will continue. Winds will blow mainly north-easterly to south-easterly, light to moderate, Force 3 to 4. The sea will be calm to slightly rough in the west and south, whilst slightly rough in the north and east. Temperatures will drop to around 11C inland, around 14C on the coast and around 8C in the higher mountains.

Sunday forecast

Tomorrow morning, increased high clouds will appear, but progressively the weather will become partly cloudy with isolated showers expected in the western half of the island. An isolated thunderstorm cannot be ruled out in the north-west.

Winds will blow mainly north-easterly to south-easterly, soon shifting south-easterly to south-westerly, light to moderate, Force 3 to 4. By late afternoon, winds will turn south-westerly and strengthen to moderate to strong Force 4 to 5 on windward coasts. The sea will be generally slightly rough. Temperatures will rise to around 26C inland, around 25C on the coast and around 15C in the higher mountains.

On Sunday, local showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected. Hail is expected during thunderstorms, whilst winds may vary and strengthen.

Monday and Tuesday

On Monday, locally increased clouds will appear at intervals, expected to bring isolated showers and possibly an isolated thunderstorm after midday. On Tuesday, weather in most areas will be mainly fine with temporarily increased clouds, which may bring isolated showers in the mountains.

Temperatures on Sunday will drop, whilst until Tuesday no significant change is expected, remaining close to seasonal averages.
