Snow on Troodos and storms ahead as unsettled week continues

Cyprus is in for a stormy few days, with showers, thunderstorms and snow on the Troodos peaks expected to persist through Wednesday before conditions begin to ease.

On Tuesday, scattered cloud will bring isolated showers along the coasts in the morning, with conditions deteriorating through the afternoon. Local rain and thunderstorms are expected, particularly in the mountains, inland areas and the north.

Hail is possible during storms, while the highest Troodos peaks may see snow or sleet.

Winds will be variable and light at force 3 early in the day, shifting mainly south-westerly to north-westerly and reaching force 3 to 4 by midday. The sea will be smooth to slight.

Temperatures will reach around 19°C inland and on the coasts, and around 7°C at the highest mountain elevations.

Tuesday night will remain mainly cloudy with isolated rain and thunderstorms, initially along coastal areas and later spreading to the mountains. Hail cannot be ruled out, and snow or sleet is again expected on the highest Troodos peaks.

Patchy or dense fog may form in inland and eastern areas towards dawn. Winds will be light katabatic and locally variable at force 3. The sea will be calm to slight.

Wednesday will stay mainly cloudy with local rain and isolated thunderstorms continuing. Hail remains possible, and the highest mountain peaks may again see snow or sleet.

Thursday will be partly to mostly cloudy with local rain and the chance of an isolated thunderstorm, though conditions are expected to improve noticeably from early afternoon.

Friday will see periods of locally increased cloud with the possibility of isolated rain. Both Thursday and Friday will be affected at times by a strengthened mainly westerly to north-westerly wind field.

Temperatures are not expected to change significantly through Thursday, remaining slightly below seasonal averages, with a small rise forecast for Friday. Snow depth at the Chionistra ski area stood at 26 centimetres at the time of the forecast.
