‘Slum’ in Larnaca centre to be demolished by September’s end

A ‘slum’ in the heart of coastal Larnaca which is an eyesore to all will be completely abolished by September’s end, mayor Andreas Vyras told Philenews on Thursday.

In fact, most of the total of 11 makeshift premises erected nearly five decades ago have already been demolished. The remaining two whose owners refused to move have finally agreed to it ,Vyras also said, adding that they will be gone by September 15.

The “buildings” were built after the 1974 invasio by Turkey on a site belonging to EVKAF (Turkish Cypriot religious endowment foundation) in order to accommodate displaced professionals.

The Municipality has been trying for years to find a solution to the issue since none of the owners of the properties in question had a contract or paid rent.

But the Municipality – in cooperation with the Guardian of Turkish Cypriot Properties – has managed to provide two options: to either give them financial compensation of 20,000 euros and leave the site, or stay and pay rent imposed by the Guardian after the demolition works are over.
