Sixty-year-old Kyriakos Kyriakou killed in Limassol-Troodos road collision

A 60-year-old man was killed and a motorcyclist left fighting for his life following a violent road collision on the Limassol–Troodos road on Sunday afternoon.

Kyriakos Kyriakou died at Limassol General Hospital shortly after the crash, which occurred at 1:35 PM near the junction leading to the Vati landfill. The accident marks the second road fatality in Cyprus within 24 hours, following the death of 17-year-old Ioannis Nikolaou in Nicosia on Saturday evening.

Collision at the junction

Limassol Traffic Police Chief Marios Charalambous told reporters that Kyriakou was driving toward the main road and attempted to make a right-hand turn toward Limassol. In doing so, he blocked the path of a 40-year-old motorcyclist travelling north toward Troodos.

The impact was so severe that Kyriakou became trapped in the wreckage of his car, requiring the Fire Service to cut him free.

Motorcyclist unlicensed and without helmet

The 40-year-old motorcyclist was rushed to a private hospital in serious condition. Police confirmed that the rider did not hold a valid motorcycle licence and was not wearing a protective helmet at the time of the collision.

When asked if Kyriakou was wearing a seatbelt, Charalambous said the matter is still under investigation.

Road safety review

While a right-hand turn is permitted at the specific junction, the Traffic Department is investigating the exact circumstances of the crash.

The collision occurred on a three-lane stretch of road featuring two uphill lanes and one downhill lane. Following the tragedy, authorities may review current traffic arrangements in the area to prevent future accidents.
