A 6-year-old girl is being treated at Makarios Hospital after being found unconscious at the bottom of a pool at the Tsirio swimming centre in Limassol on Wednesday afternoon following a near-drowning incident.
The child was taking part in a Sports for All (AGO) swimming lesson alongside other children. During the activity, under circumstances being investigated, she lost consciousness and was found underwater.
Instructors and coaches reacted immediately, pulling her from the pool and providing first aid. She was taken by ambulance initially to a private hospital and then to Makarios Hospital.
Hospital sources stated that the 6-year-old is in good general condition, with satisfactory laboratory results, and remains under precautionary observation in a paediatric ward.
The Cyprus Sports Organisation issued a statement following an emergency meeting of its Control Committee on Thursday, 4 December, to examine the incident.
“Instructors and Sports for All staff acted immediately and effectively. Following the relevant protocol and after providing first aid, the child was not in danger until the ambulance arrived. Thanks to the immediate intervention of those responsible, the child is well and is being monitored as a precaution,” the organisation said.
The Control Committee found that instructors and Sports for All staff acted correctly and applied the protocol. All Sports for All instructors receive continuous training from the organisation to be fully trained in first aid and lifesaving matters, it noted.
