Sirens sound at RAF Akrotiri as base remains on high alert

Sirens are sounding at RAF Akrotiri and residents in the area have received a message warning of an ongoing threat, according to initial reports.

Residents received the following message:

“There is an ongoing security threat. Please remain indoors and stay in place until further official notice. Move away from windows and take cover behind or beneath substantial, solid furniture. Please await further instructions”.

Following the launch of military strikes against Iran by Israel and the United States on 28 February 2026, Iran launched a series of counter-strikes in the region, with RAF Akrotiri struck by a drone on 1 March.

On 2 March, the airbase suffered further attacks, as additional drones were intercepted in what appeared to be an ongoing offensive. Following these attacks, Britain, Greece and France sent forces to help Cyprus defend itself.

The UK’s Ministry of Defence has said Royal Navy Wildcat helicopters are due to arrive at the base within days to bolster air defences.

Cyprus has repeatedly stated it is not a party to the conflict. President Christodoulides pledged that the country “does not participate in any way, nor does it intend to be part of any military operation,” stressing Cyprus’s commitment to its humanitarian role.
