School nurses on government’s radar, says President

The stationing of school nurses is to be gradually introduced, President Nikos Christodoulides announced on Tuesday, in the context of his 100 days in government press conference.

The president spoke of the institution, to be piloted in schools in remote areas, as part of modernising the education system.

The introduction of school nurses is to be rolled out in remote school districts, starting with Agros, Lefkara and Polemi.

The matter of school nurses has been under discussion for several years and concerned educator and parent groups have repeatedly called for in-staff nurses so as to enable a prompt response to emergencies, as well as proper management of children with illnesses and health conditions.

“Through its actions, the government seeks a modern education system, firmly committed to serving the needs of students and society,” the president said.

“We promote education with open horizons and expanded options…giving [the] young the tools to utilise their potential, talents and abilities, [with emphasis on] democratic ethos and critical thinking.”

Christodoulides also spoke of the comprehensive proposal for a new student evaluation system, the extension of the optional all-day school as of September, and the abolition of the purchase of services in various educational programs.
