School guards face daily attacks, security firm says

A private security company responsible for four west Limassol schools said vandalism and attacks are a daily occurrence after a security guard was attacked with an explosive on Monday at Ypsonas Third Primary School.

Christos Photiou, head of the private security firm covering the area, told philenews that “the situation is uncontrolled.” Despite police presence at certain incidents, “there does not appear to be any result,” he stated.

Guards face daily stone-throwing, flares and crowbars, whilst Monday’s incident resulted in serious guard injuries, Photiou explained.

Four west Limassol schools face uncontrolled vandalism situation

Incidents are recorded at four regional schools: Ypsonas Third Primary School, Ypsonas Gymnasium, Kolossi Lyceum and Episkopi Gymnasium.

According to Photiou, the guard was inside the school when unknown individuals threw molotov cocktails intending to burn artificial grass. The guard extinguished the fire and contacted the company to notify police. However, whilst leaving school premises to call for assistance, he faced renewed attack with flares and molotov cocktails, sustaining facial injuries.

Minors aged 15-17 use molotov cocktails and flares in attacks

Photiou noted perpetrators are minors aged 15-17 years who travel on motorcycles without licence plates, often using damaged vehicles declared immobilised. “Police are present, but we do not see them conducting checks,” he emphasised.

He expressed frustration regarding authorities’ inaction. “There is damage and vandalism, but nothing happens. Police arrive, hold a paper and write. They do nothing. What are they waiting for, to come with guns?” he questioned.

“The situation has escalated, is out of control and cannot be controlled,” Photiou stated regarding the escalating incidents across the four educational facilities.
