The Electricity Authority of Cyprus has started disconnecting consumers from the electricity network in rotating cuts lasting up to 30 minutes as the power grid struggles to meet demand.
Multiple households and businesses are experiencing temporary power outages as the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) system proves unable to adequately cover electricity demand.
The Transmission System Operator has announced that initial consumer disconnections have begun, with decisions on potential additional cuts to be determined based on evolving demand and generation patterns throughout the evening.
The maximum generation capacity from EAC units stands at 1,062 megawatts today due to faults across all power stations, whilst current demand approaches 1,070 megawatts. Some photovoltaic systems continue contributing to generation on a very limited scale, though conditions have worsened tonight due to zero contribution from wind farms.
The Transmission System Operator stated this afternoon that efforts would be made to ensure electricity supply interruptions, where deemed necessary, do not exceed 30 minutes per consumer group.
Wind power installations, which typically provide supplementary capacity during peak demand periods, are producing no electricity due to calm weather conditions.
Solar panel installations continue providing minimal generation support as evening approaches, though their contribution diminishes significantly as daylight hours reduce.
