While many roads on both the main and secondary road networks flooded, causing temporary difficulties for drivers and pedestrians, more serious flood phenomena were largely avoided.
This was primarily because the dry ground, following a prolonged period of drought, effectively absorbed the bulk of the water, thereby helping to recharge the aquifer. Minor problems were reported in open spaces and the basements of homes due to localised water accumulation.
The sustained rainfall was met with a sense of optimism among farmers and the general public. Attention is now focused on tomorrow’s official water department recordings at the dams, as the rainfall is expected to deliver the first measurable inflows to the reservoirs, even if on a small scale.
