A 70-year-old road worker was killed after a car struck an illuminated warning sign and hit him as he set up cones at roadworks on the Nicosia-Limassol motorway.
The man died whilst closing off the right lane with cones at around 7.25pm on a stretch of motorway with no road lighting, a fact that possibly affected visibility.
Limassol Traffic head Marios Charalambous, speaking at the scene, said a 37-year-old drove a private vehicle on the motorway when, at some point after Moni village, he hit an illuminated warning arrow in the right lane where road works were being conducted.
At that moment, he struck and fatally injured the 70-year-old worker.
Asked if the driver was speeding, Charalambous said that according to initial information, signage existed at the location which will be recorded.
According to witness testimonies, the illuminated arrow was on.
Asked about a van the victim was in, he said this is something being investigated thoroughly.
Police are currently at the scene examining all the circumstances.
The signage at the location will be recorded in detail.The car driver was lightly injured and taken to a private hospital for examination.
He has already tested negative for drugs and alcohol.
Charalambous noted that the lack of road lighting at the location is also a parameter under investigation.
Police are taking statements from witnesses, including the victim’s colleagues and the roadworks managers.
All circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
