Drivers must pull over immediately when emergency vehicles approach with lights and sirens on, or risk up to one year in prison and a €3,000 fine, police have warned.
The reminder comes after police observed drivers failing to give way at traffic light junctions with speed cameras, apparently because they fear being caught for a traffic violation.
Police stressed that drivers who stop for an emergency vehicle and are flagged by the photo-enforcement system can request to have the violation deleted.
When an ambulance, police car, fire engine or other emergency vehicle approaches with lights and sirens on, drivers are legally required to move their vehicle immediately as close as possible to the edge of the road and stop until it passes.
The law applies to ambulances, police vehicles, National Guard Military Police, Fire Service, Forestry Department fire vehicles, Civil Defence and lifeguard vehicles.
Failure to comply carries imprisonment up to one year or a fine up to €3,000 or both.
Police said that giving way to emergency vehicles is vital and can be lifesaving. Even a one-minute delay can make the difference between life and death.
