President Anastasiades has conveyed to Pope Francis an invitation for the Vatican to participate as an observer state in Cyprus’ initiative to address climate change in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.
The President will officially visit the Vatican at the invitation of the Pope himself from Sunday to Tuesday and this issue will be discussed thoroughly, according to an official announcement.
Pope Francis has already stated that Cyprus’ initiative is in line with the urgent need for action, aimed at mitigating climate change and alleviating negative effects.
The Cyprus initiative on climate change was launched by President Anastasiades in 2019 when Nicosia took the lead in formulating a regional climate action plan for the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East.
The regional action plan was drawn up by 240 scientists and technocrats from the wider region and includes targeted initiatives in 13 thematic sections.Cyprus
