President Nikos Christodoulides issued a firm assurance on Sunday that the government stands by those affected by the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak, emphasizing that the state and livestock farmers share a common goal.
Presiding over an emergency meeting with industry stakeholders at the Presidential Palace, the President noted that a unified strategy will be defined to address the crisis. Despite the “difficult regional situation” currently occupying the administration, Christodoulides stressed that the meeting’s timing is indicative of the high priority given to the livestock sector.
A shared approach
Addressing the participants, the President called for a comprehensive review of the current situation to decide on a collective path forward.
“I want to assure you that as a Government we are by your side; we approach the issue exactly as you do,” the President said. “We fully understand the importance of the sector, not only for the country’s interior but also for exports and many other areas.”
The President highlighted that the government has already taken an initial support decision through the Council of Ministers, with further measures expected to follow.
“What I want us to determine today is the strategy of how we move forward together,” he added. “Our goal is the same, it is common, and we proceed together.”
