Pregnant woman at 35 weeks air-lifted to Israel for urgent birth and surgery

A pregnant woman in her 35th week was air-lifted to Israel yesterday evening so she could safely deliver a baby that will need surgery after birth, Cyprus health authorities said.

Monica Kyriakou, Director of Health Services at the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO), said the emergency transfer was arranged to ensure the birth is completed safely. The foetus will require a surgical operation once born, she told radio show Proino Dromologio.

Since the HIO took over responsibility for sending patients abroad, authorities have carried out 27 air ambulance transfers, according to Kyriakkou. Ten of those cases were handled as life-threatening situations, with transfers completed within hours, she said.
