Police warn of new online fraud, linked to hotel bookings

A new type of online fraud is circulating, the cybercrime unit warned on Friday.

The scam, which is on the rise, involves misleading messages for the supposed cancellation of reservations in tourist accommodation and hotels.

In particular, the scam targets people who made reservations for holiday accommodation through websites. The scammers are sending out misleading messages claiming their reservation will be cancelled due to non-payment.

The public is cautioned not to proceed with payment through any suspicious electronic link, as this will likely result in a double charge, or their bank details being intercepted and stolen.

Any recipients of such messages should communicate directly the hotel holding the reservation and not reply through the booking platform, police said.

In the event the link is mistakenly activated and bank details shared, it is recommended to immediately contact the bank and cancel the card.

Police have also alerted hotel booking staff to be particularly attentive for suspicious messages and requests from customers that include links, and take precautions.
