Police are investigating charges of careless and dangerous driving, as well as failure to stop at a police signal, following incidents in Paphos province on Monday evening.
During routine traffic checks in Paphos, police officers signalled a driver to stop for inspection. The driver failed to comply and accelerated, driving dangerously and using the opposite lane of traffic at intervals, creating a risk of collision.
During attempts to stop the vehicle, the suspect’s car blocked the path of the pursuing police vehicle, causing the police car to crash into an embankment and sustain damage.
Police officers fired a number of warning shots in order to stop the vehicle during the pursuit.
The vehicle was eventually stopped in the Paphos area, and subsequent inspection revealed the driver was a 32-year-old man with a 19-year-old female passenger.
The 32-year-old was arrested under an outstanding judicial warrant for unpaid fines and placed in custody. No charges emerged against the 19-year-old passenger.
Paphos Traffic Police, in cooperation with Peyia Police Station, continue their investigations into the incident.
