Police arrest six in Nicosia as New Year’s operations intensify

Six people were arrested overnight as police ramped up targeted patrols across urban areas to maintain order and protect citizens during New Year’s celebrations.

Officers patrolling Nicosia at approximately 1:30 am intervened in a street brawl, arresting two men aged 24 and 28. The pair now face charges of affray, assaulting a police officer, drunkenness, causing a disturbance, and public insult.

In a separate incident in the capital, a 38-year-old man was detained after a police officer found him intoxicated, shouting, and causing a public nuisance. He is being investigated for assaulting an officer, public insult, and drunkenness.

Other arrests during the sweep included:

Two individuals for staying illegally in the Republic of Cyprus.

One individual for illegal drug possession.

The operation extended to the roads and nightlife, with officers conducting 35 inspections of premises to suppress lawless behaviour. Traffic checks resulted in over 130 citations for various offences. Eleven drivers were caught behind the wheel while over the legal alcohol limit, and ten vehicles were impounded.

Police confirmed these actions are part of a continuous, nationwide preventive strategy designed to deter crime and bolster public safety.
