Pensioner arrested in connection with Pelathousa fire released without charge

A 71-year-old man arrested late on Tuesday in connection with a fire that broke out in Pelathousa, Paphos district, earlier this week has been released without charge.

Police who suspect arson behind the fierce fire also said on Thursday that there was not enough evidence against him.

A witness had testified to seeing the pensioner who owns land in the area driving by at the time when the fire broke out.

But apart from this testimony no additional evidence was obtained with police saying investigations will continue.

The fire which burnt 1.5km of dry grass, wild vegetation and trees also caused   extensive damage to the house of Cypriot filmmaker Panicos Chrysanthou.

The damage includes his rich, historically significant archive.
