Party demands investigation after dogs found dead in Astromeritis water tank

The Green Party of Cyprus has called for an investigation after stray animals were found dead in an overflowing water reservoir in the Astromeritis area, within the buffer zone.

In a statement, the party condemned what it described as barbarity and criminal negligence that led to the alleged drowning of stray animals, after an unfenced water tank reportedly overflowed.

According to the party, a video sent by a member of Green Watch Green Party shows an unprotected reservoir overflowing, with stray animals swept away and dying by drowning. The party said it was publishing the footage in full so that the public could see what happened.

The party said the presence of a water reservoir without basic fencing or safety measures amounted to serious negligence and raised questions over who was responsible and why no preventive measures had been taken.

It called on the president of the Astromeritis Community Council to ensure an immediate, thorough and fully transparent investigation to establish how and why the reservoir remained unprotected.

The party also urged Evrychou Police to launch a criminal investigation and bring those responsible before justice.

In cooperation with the Animal Party, the party demanded immediate corrective measures and full fencing of the reservoir, inspections of similar infrastructure in the area, and accountability for those found responsible.

The statement concluded that protection of life, human and animal alike, is an obligation.
