Parties attack government over video showing alleged illegal Christodoulides campaign financing

Political parties started reacting to a video circulating on platform X that casts shadows over the handling of money during the 2023 presidential campaign and raises questions about investor access to the Presidential Palace.

Opposition figures are demanding urgent answers to the material, which has been circulating online in recent hours, and speak of damage to institutions.

The reactions were swift, with political leaders and MPs speaking out publicly through their personal accounts.

DISY president Annita Demetriou said: “For quite some time now, a video has been circulating that implicates people and the government in illegal practices. I hope it does not correspond to reality. I expect the competent authorities to do the obvious.”

AKEL general secretary Stefanos Stefanou said: “The video circulating on social media, which relates to funding implicating the Christodoulides government, raises serious institutional and political issues to which the government must give clear answers. We are waiting and will return to this.”

MP Irene Charalambidou said: “If I understand correctly, we are watching a shocking video that we see and don’t believe because it features the government with its associated businesspeople! There must be an immediate statement because we will have worse than the assistant’s resignation and the tragicomic events! Now there is also footage. Is it true? Or not?”

Charalambidou called on government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis by name to provide explanations.

MP Alexandra Attalides wrote: “Our presidency is starting very well, Nikos Christodoulides. When we talked to you about transparency you called us toxic!”

The Presidential Palace has not issued an official announcement so far, but the pressure being exerted by opposition parties signals a heated political scene for the coming days. The question hanging over the matter is whether the government will choose the path of full denial or proceed with clarifications regarding the authenticity and content of the audiovisual material.

Philenews is publishing the video as it circulated on platform X, clarifying that it does not adopt anything from its content. However, in the interests of the public and because the matter has already been referred to police for investigation, we are obliged to inform our readership.
