Paphos reservoirs near full capacity, raising hopes for a better summer water supply

A third reservoir in the Paphos district is expected to overflow later today, marking a significant improvement in the region’s water balance compared to the same period last year. This development brings relief to local producers and citizens, as the water situation continues to improve.

The third small reservoir in the district, that of Agia Marina Chrysochous, is now nearly full, with the latest water level report showing a 98.7% capacity. Overflow is expected in the coming hours. This follows the earlier overflows at the other two smaller reservoirs in the Chrysochous area, located in Argaka and Pomos.

Moreover, the comparison of the water levels across Paphos’ reservoirs with the same period last year shows a marked improvement that was unanticipated just a few months ago.

For instance, the second-largest reservoir in Cyprus, Asprokremmos, is now at 32.6% capacity, up from 25.4% last year. The Kannaviou reservoir has risen to 42%, compared to 26.6% at this time last year. Additionally, the water level at the previously empty, due to damage, Mavrokolymbos reservoir has reached 73.9% today.

In the Chrysochous district, two reservoirs have already overflowed, and the third is expected to follow suit shortly — a stark contrast to last year, when no overflows were recorded. The largest reservoir in the area, Evretou, currently stands at 38% capacity, compared to 24.9% last year.

Although experts caution that these improvements do not fully resolve Cyprus’ severe water issue, they represent a positive shift in the region’s water situation. Combined with the repair of the Mavrokolymbos reservoir and the permanent desalination plant in Koukli, which was damaged in the 2024 fire, these developments foster optimism in Paphos for the upcoming summer. The ongoing rain and continued inflows into the reservoirs further contribute to this positive outlook.
