Paphos mobilises crews ahead of Storm Byron

The Paphos District Local Government Organisation is on standby to deal with potential flooding as Storm Byron approaches Cyprus.

The organisation said it has taken preventative action alongside the Fire Service and Local Authorities to tackle possible flooding, according to an announcement.

The public and businesses are being informed to take all necessary measures to minimise the consequences of potential flooding ahead of bad weather in the coming days, the announcement said.

The Paphos District Organisation service is on standby to assist with special crews and equipment to deal with and restore the effects of possible extreme weather events.

Inspections and cleaning of drains, manholes, channels and natural stormwater receptors at critical points in Paphos Municipality and Geroskipou Municipality have already been carried out, the announcement said.

The organisation urged residents to check that manholes and stormwater drains outside their homes are not blocked by various materials and that gutters are working normally.

It also urged residents to limit their movements and avoid working or staying in basement areas if heavy rainfall has been announced and their area has had flooding problems in the past. Residents should cooperate with the relevant services to ensure the smooth operation of the network, it said.

In case of overflow, damage or movement of a manhole cover, or if debris is observed that could obstruct stormwater flow, residents should contact 7777 7343 immediately.

The organisation emphasises prevention, infrastructure protection, and citizen protection, and through close cooperation with all relevant authorities, it contributes with all its forces to ensure normal conditions for dealing with the effects of heavy and prolonged rainfall during the winter period, the announcement concluded.
