Paphos farmers’ market nears completion after decade-long gap

Paphos Municipality’s outdoor farmers’ market is nearing completion and will open shortly, ending a gap of roughly a decade in the city’s provision of such facilities.

The new market for perishables and other agricultural products is being built within the Pervola Municipal Car Park in Paphos’s redeveloped traditional commercial centre. It occupies 500 square metres.

Deputy Mayor Angelos Onisiforou said the facility addresses a significant gap in the city.

Local residents long accustomed to visiting farmers’ markets and buying fresh produce directly from growers had urgently requested the market’s reopening, he said. Tourists also view such activities as part of their experience when visiting a destination.

Very soon, consumers will be able to buy products directly from producers at better prices, essentially straight from the production site to their plate, Onisiforou said.

The new Paphos farmers’ market will also significantly benefit producers themselves by strengthening their finances and limiting the role of middlemen, he added.

The project was signed for construction last October.
