A “state hospital” in occupied Nicosia faces flood risk from overflowing dams, with authorities examining evacuation plans if conditions worsen, the area’s mayor said.
The hospital sits on a riverbank and is threatened by overflow from dams in Kanlı and Kioneli, Mehmet Harmancı told the “TAK” broadcaster, according to reports from the occupied areas.
Harmancı said he was in continuous coordination with “civil protection” services, whilst the hospital “director” was examining evacuation scenarios. The avenue in front of the hospital has been closed.
Authorities evacuated residents from flooded buildings in four to five cases across occupied Nicosia, but no other incidents were reported, Harmancı said.
Schools in the occupied areas will remain closed on Wednesday following the latest forecasts from the “meteorological service”, “education minister” Nazım Çavuşoğlu said.
All “public” and private schools will stay shut, whilst teachers will be given “administrative leave” from 13:00 to 17:00 on Tuesday, he said. No schools were facing flood problems or safety issues for pupils, Çavuşoğlu said.
