Occasion honours Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage for getting Europa Nostra Award

An occasion marking the event of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage (TCCH) being awarded the 2021 European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award and the Grand Prix Laureate within the class for “Devoted Service to Heritage by Organisations and People” was held on the Residence for Cooperation on Monday, with audio system praising the work of the TCCH.

The occasion celebrated the TCCH having been chosen from amongst exemplary heritage achievements throughout Europe to obtain the area`s high honour within the subject of conservation tasks, a UNDP press launch mentioned.

In attendance on the occasion have been diplomatic corps, Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage and Europa Nostra members, representatives from the European Fee, UN and UNDP in addition to TCCH’s Heritage Youth Ambassadors who’ve been volunteering to have interaction and promote the preservation of cultural heritage In Cyprus.

Congratulating the TCCH, Myrto Zambarta, Head of the European Fee Illustration in Cyprus, mentioned the bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage stays a key element of the reconciliation and confidence-building actions supported by the EU in Cyprus”.

Jakhongir Khaydarov, UNDP’s Head of Workplace expressed his appreciation for TCCH and thanked the committee for entrusting UNDP with the implementation of over 80 tasks to this point. “We stand earlier than you right this moment as proud companions”, he added.

Takis Hadjidemetriou, Co-chairman of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage spoke in regards to the work of TCCH saying that, “If the Technical Committee has been working constructively for therefore a few years, we owe it primarily to the spirit of honesty and belief that, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, have established between us, removed from any expediencies or controversies, with solely concern for Cyprus and its monuments.”

Ali Tuncay, Co-chairman of of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage mentioned “Cyprus is an island on the crossroads of three continents. Traditions and customs of all these civilisations, like Mycenaean, Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman left their mark on nearly all elements of the island. Each the mosque and the church are ours. Because the members of the Technical Committee, we acknowledge the accountability and responsibility of preserving this richness and handing it over to future generations.”

Since 2012, 88 cultural heritage websites island‐broad have been conserved, structurally supported, bodily protected or restored by TCCH and UNDP, with funding from the EU.

Roughly €22.4 million have been offered by the European Fee to implement the priorities of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage for the preservation of the island‐broad cultural heritage in Cyprus. The European Union is the largest supporter of the work of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage in Cyprus.
