No immediate threat to Cyprus despite regional tensions, defence minister says

There is no immediate threat to the Republic of Cyprus despite tensions in the wider region, Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas said, noting that the threats recorded so far have concerned the British bases on the island.

He clarified, however, that the British bases are located within the territory of the Republic of Cyprus.

Speaking on the programme Proino Dromologio, Palmas said the National Guard remains at a high level of operational readiness and stressed that Cyprus has the means to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity if necessary.

He also thanked Greece and France for their immediate response and for sending military assets, describing the move as an act of solidarity between friendly and allied countries. He added that other European states have also expressed willingness to offer support.

Responding to a related question, the defence minister said upgrade works at the Andreas Papandreou air base and the Evangelos Florakis naval base are continuing as planned, noting that both facilities are key infrastructure for Cyprus’ role in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Palmas also urged citizens to remain calm and to be cautious of misinformation.
