Nicosia to revamp historic centre, mayor says

Nicosia Municipality is hiring a project manager for the first time to oversee a €12 million reconstruction of the capital’s main pedestrian streets, Mayor Charalambos Prountzos told Phileleftheros.

The Phase C project will rebuild the Ledra and Onasagorou pedestrian zones, with facade beautification work expected to start in early 2026. The Revival Fund is covering the total cost.

The municipality launched an open tender for a project manager with a contract value of €75,000.

“We’re listening to the concerns and legitimate anxiety of the public and businesses about the proper and timely execution of the project. That’s why we’re strengthening the team for study, design and execution of the entire project with a Project Manager,” Prountzos said.

The project manager will monitor progress independently, coordinate all involved parties and handle risk management objectively, according to the mayor. The tender closes on 9 January 2026, with funding coming from the state budget and Nicosia Municipality.

The project manager will take part in public consultations with local businesses, Prountzos said.

“The city belongs to its citizens. No unilateral decisions will be taken; there will be an extensive round of consultation and planning. We want to listen, co-shape and ensure the final result serves everyone’s needs. The project director will be present in this process, ensuring that any implementation aligns with the decisions taken,” Prountzos said.

The municipality has already installed awnings on Ledra and Onasagorou streets to increase shade during midday hours. Shopfront beautification work is underway and will expand further.

The authority has also fitted access platforms at shop entrances to improve mobility for people with physical disabilities.

The municipal council recently approved stricter controls on micromobility vehicles after problems were identified at several locations, including the pedestrian streets.

“With the €12 million we’ve secured and the pioneering inclusion of the Project Manager, we will consult exhaustively with stakeholders to take the big step together towards a more attractive, functional and humane Nicosia,” the mayor said.
