Nicosia ranked Europe’s second-best travel destination for 2026

Nicosia has been named the second-best destination in Europe for 2026, according to the annual ranking released by European Best Destinations (EBD).

The capital followed only Madrid, Spain, in a poll that saw more than 1.3 million votes cast by travellers from across the globe. The city’s high placement follows its designation last month as the “Best Cultural Destination” on the continent.

The ranking, which evaluates nearly 500 locations based on international arrivals, search demand, and social media momentum, comes as Nicosia prepares for increased international visibility during the 2026 Cyprus Presidency of the EU Council.

While Nicosia and Madrid led the field, Italy dominated the list’s volume with seven entries in the top 20, including Verona in fourth place and the island of Burano in eighth. Slovenia’s Štajerska Region—home to former “Best Wine Capital” Maribor—secured third place. To determine the final standings, EBD monitored growth rates and international media visibility to create a longlist of 42 high-momentum destinations. Registered travellers were then asked to select up to three locations they would “most like to visit in 2026,” with the caveat that participants are prohibited from voting for destinations within their own country.

Rank Destination Country
1 Madrid Spain
2 Nicosia Cyprus
3 Štajerska Region Slovenia
4 Verona Italy
5 Paris France

The Greek islands also maintained a strong presence, with Ano Koufonissi and Avlemonas on Kythira placing 13th and 16th respectively. The inclusion of Taormina in 20th place was attributed in part to its status as the setting for the television series The White Lotus, reflecting the influence of “screen tourism” on the 2026 data.

For Nicosia, the “Best Cultural Destination” title specifically highlighted its Mediterranean character and historic Venetian walls.
