Disy MP Averof Neophytou is seeking to lower the voting age to 17 and argued that now is the right time to do so.
In a statement on Thursday, Neophytou reasoned that lowering the voting age to 17 is justified as the new generation can be trusted.
“It is my firm belief that broadening the electoral base is broadening democracy,” he said.
Neophytou added that young people are growing up in time of both opportunities and challenges, meaning it is only right that they have a say in the democratic process.
According to the European Parliament’s factsheet, the voting age is 18 in all member states except Austria and Malta, where it is 16, and Greece, where it is 17.
