An operation to rescue two young men trapped in a gorge in Lagoudera is currently underway by the authorities. Despite using a helicopter, reaching the location proved impossible due to the area’s terrain.
Fire Service Press Spokesperson Post:
At 15:10, the Fire Service received a call for assistance regarding the rescue of two young men (18-year-old males). Following communication with them, they reported that they lost their way while walking on a mountain path near the Lagoudera Community, resulting in them becoming trapped in a spot (a gorge) from which they cannot exit.
The Nicosia Fire Stations responded with rescue teams and vehicles to assist them. Note that the Fire Service Call Management Centre is in continuous contact with the trapped individuals.
Following the assessment, authorities determined the trapped individuals were in a steep location, far from any road, and approaching them would require a climb of many hours. A request was made to the Police for the use of an MAEP (Police Air Wing) helicopter.
Simultaneously, the Fire Service’s EMAK (Disaster Response Special Unit) responded with a special rescue team. The MAEP helicopter approached the location, but due to the rugged terrain and vegetation, the helicopter, despite multiple attempts, could not complete the rescue and withdrew.
Currently, members of the Nicosia Fire Stations and the Fire Service EMAK are proceeding along the path the young men were using. The EMAK team will descend from there to reach them by rappelling. We anticipate the teams’ arrival. They are also carrying clothing to give to the trapped individuals.
An update will follow once the rescue operation concludes.
