A mother whose infant was allegedly abused at a nursery has accused authorities of indifference and delays in handling the case, with her child continuing to display trauma symptoms months after the incident.
Speaking on the “Mesimeri kai Kati” programme, the mother described ongoing fears affecting her child, including nighttime disturbances and unexplained distress. The infant continues waking at night “screaming and crying without any particular reason,” she stated.

The family approached a psychologist through GHS but received limited assistance, as the child cannot yet speak or express what happened. The mother sent letters requesting forensic medical examinations but received responses indicating such examinations only occur in cases of sexual abuse or death.
“We decided to seek help privately because the child’s injuries were numerous,” the mother explained. According to a report by Dr Matsaki,s the trauma did not result from simple falls but required investigation as infant abuse.
Police conducted investigations and forwarded findings to the Attorney General, who decided the nursery director would face court charges for negligence rather than actual bodily harm as the family requested.
Seven unanswered letters sent to Attorney General since March
The mother emphasised that negligence carries only a €500 out-of-court settlement. Consequently, the family sent a letter to the Attorney General on 7 March, copied to the Justice Minister and Police Chief, requesting a review of the director’s charges.
“Since then, no response. From 29 May until 25 August we sent seven letters noting significant time had passed. We have received no reply,” she emphasised.
When asked whether the nursery operates normally and if the director remains employed, the mother indicated the facility continues operating, though she cannot confirm if the same person directs it.
The family has also sent letters to forensic medical services, the Health Ministry and other relevant authorities, receiving “no response” across all channels.
