Met Department warns of isolated storms and mountain snow as unstable front moves in

Unstable weather conditions are expected to persist across Cyprus until Thursday, with the Department of Meteorology forecasting isolated thunderstorms and snowfall on the island’s highest peaks starting today.

A weak low-pressure system currently affecting the region will bring increasingly cloudy skies on Tuesday. While the day will begin with isolated showers, primarily in the north and west, conditions are expected to deteriorate by the evening. Forecasters predict local rain and isolated thunderstorms overnight, with snow or sleet likely on the highest reaches of the Troodos mountains.

Winds are set to strengthen in the afternoon, blowing from the southwest at four to five Beaufort, with the sea state becoming slight to moderate.

Temperatures will reach a maximum of 16°C inland and 17°C along the coast, though they are expected to struggle beyond 7°C in the higher mountains.

The unsettled pattern will continue into Wednesday, with further showers and a slight drop in temperatures as the system moves through. However, the Department notes that a gradual recovery is expected by Friday, with temperatures set to rise slightly above the seasonal average for late January.
