The Famagusta District Court yesterday sentenced a 37-year-old man to 14 months in prison after finding him guilty of animal mistreatment and illegal stay in the Republic of Cyprus.
The case was revealed on the afternoon of 7 May 2025, when police received information that an individual was dismembering an animal in a car park in free Famagusta.
Police went to the scene, where they found the dismembered animal along with the tools used for the act. Veterinary Services later identified the animal as a kangaroo.
The Police stated that the prison sentence imposed for the animal abuse case sends a clear and strong message that such acts are treated with the maximum seriousness and that legislation is strictly applied without tolerance.
