Man caught pulling birds from trapping nets in poaching operation near Larnaca

Police are investigating a poaching case in Larnaca after officers caught a 35-year-old man removing wild birds from trapping nets in the early hours of this morning.

Members of the Anti-Poaching Unit of MMAD, the police’s specialist wildlife crime squad, were on patrol near Tochni in the Larnaca district when they spotted the man approaching a field.

Two bird trapping nets had been set up there, along with a bird call device that was actively broadcasting imitation bird sounds. Officers found the man attempting to pull birds that had become caught in the nets.

After stopping him for checks, officers freed four wild birds from the nets, believed to be thrushes.

The 35-year-old was taken to Zygi Police Station, which is handling the investigation.
